5 Healthy Homemade Cat Foods
Home-cooked foods are always the best, whether for you or your cat. Cooking can be a wonderfully de-stressing activity, and doing it for your pet can make their diet wholesome and healthy. Here are five healthy homemade foods you can make for your feline friends.
1. Chicken and Eggs
This protein and fat-rich recipe is perfect for growing kittens and even older cats. Chop up cooked chicken and hardboiled eggs. You can add crushed bone meal and vitamin tablets to increase the nutritional value. Throw in some chopped clams, canola oil, and season with a salt substitute, like potassium chloride. Mix well and refrigerate till mealtime. With about 470 calories, this is a perfect meal for your cat, and all the ingredients are healthy and easily digestible.
2. Hey Mackerel-la
This fish is quite tasty to cat’s taste buds and is a wallet-friendly source of protein. Throw in a cup of canned mackerel, a quarter cup of cooked brown rice, and a tablespoon of sunflower seeds. Add water as required. Optionally exchange the water for chicken or beef broth to flavor the meal. This can be refrigerated for about three days. Brown rice is easily digestible and provides fiber to your cat’s diet. Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamins A, B, D, and E and minerals like zinc and iron.
3. Omelets
Eggs are the perfect source of protein. They are, in fact, considered cat superfoods. Beat three eggs with a tablespoon of milk. Optionally, you can use milk powder and water if your kitty is lactose sensitive. Pour the mixture into a pan and half cook one side. When you flip it, throw in some grated vegetables. Carrots, peas, and pumpkin are all safe for your cat. You can also add a few spoons of cottage cheese. Flip the eggs over and when both sides are cooked well, slice it up into smaller bits for your cat.
4. The Baron’s Salmon
Broccoli is a wonderful source of antioxidants. These florets combine with salmon, a source of fish oil that is essential to keep the fur and skin of your cat healthy. Combine a can of salmon, half a cup of boiled and mashed broccoli with a quarter cup of whole wheat bread crumbs, and a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast. While other yeasts and raw bread dough are bad for your cat, brewer’s yeast helps keep fleas away from your kitty’s skin. Mix all the ingredients well and serve.
5. Purrfect Greens
If you are one of those people who enjoy salads, here’s good news! You can toss one for your pets too. Cats, though primarily carnivores, enjoy the occasional green meal. Combine a quarter cup of grated zucchini, half a cup of chopped alfalfa sprouts, and an eighth of a cup of chicken stock. Serve after garnishing with ⅛ teaspoon of minced catnip. Your feline friend is sure to love this dish.
